The numbers are startling, heartbreaking, tragic.

Worst of all, they are a reality.

  • 65 Women
  • 35 Men
  • 5 Teenagers
  • 5 Children

In total, 110 lives were lost to domestic violence related-incidents in the state of Pennsylvania in 2008 alone.

The summer of 2008 was especially tragic. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, 50 Pennsylvanians lost their lives due to domestic abuse. Of that number, 36 were victims. The remaining 14 were perpetrators who either committed suicide or were killed by police.

In Luzerne County in 2008, three lives were needlessly lost to domestic violence. In Carbon County, one person was killed by her abuser in 2008.

The need for services for victims of domestic violence is greater than ever. With the unstable economy, lingering economic fears and decreases in funding, domestic violence agencies are facing great hardships. The safety of all victims, children and their families is on the line.
